Fayette County clerk faces rare opposition

For the first time in a long time, Fayette County clerk Don Blevins faces an opponent in the May 16 primary. First elected in 1981, Blevins has run five times unopposed.

His opponent is Carol Angel, 58, a former art gallery owner, in her first run for public office.

"After 25 years of Mr. Blevins in office, I think people are ready for a change," she said.

A major campaign issue for Angel is the need for suburban facilities.
"We live in the second largest county in the state and we don't have branch office one," she said. "It's difficult for some people to go downtown, park, stand in line sometimes for 21/2 hours just to renew their license plates, especially when the office closes at 4:30 p.m."

She said she would have office hours two evenings a week and on Saturday mornings.
